Immediate Dental Care When You Need It Most

Emergency Care

Dental emergencies can happen at any time and often require prompt attention to relieve pain and prevent further complications. At Irmo Dentistry, we understand that urgent dental issues don’t follow a schedule, which is why we prioritize emergency care and strive to see patients experiencing dental trauma or severe pain as quickly as possible.

When to Seek Emergency Dental Care

Not all dental issues require immediate emergency treatment, but certain symptoms and situations need urgent attention. Contact our office immediately if you experience severe, persistent tooth pain that doesn’t respond to over-the-counter pain medication, significant swelling in your face or gums, bleeding that won’t stop after applying pressure, or trauma to your teeth or jaw from an accident or injury.

Additional emergency situations include a knocked-out tooth, a cracked or broken tooth causing severe pain, lost fillings or crowns that result in sensitivity or discomfort, or infections that cause fever, swelling, or difficulty swallowing. These conditions can worsen quickly without proper treatment and may lead to more serious health complications.

What to Do Before You Arrive

While waiting for your emergency appointment, there are several steps you can take to manage pain and protect your oral health. For severe tooth pain, rinse your mouth with warm salt water and take over-the-counter pain medication as directed on the package. Apply a cold compress to the outside of your cheek for 15-20 minutes to reduce swelling.

If you have a knocked-out tooth, handle it carefully by the crown (not the root), rinse it gently with water if dirty, and try to place it back in the socket if possible. If you cannot reinsert the tooth, store it in milk or saliva and bring it with you to your appointment. For broken teeth, save any pieces and rinse your mouth with warm water.

Same-Day Emergency Appointments

Irmo Dentistry reserves time each day specifically for emergency patients. When you call with a dental emergency, our team will assess your situation and work to schedule you for same-day treatment whenever possible. We understand that dental pain can be debilitating and will make every effort to provide prompt relief.

For the best chance of securing an emergency appointment, contact our office as early in the day as possible. Our staff will ask about your symptoms and provide guidance on managing your situation until you can be seen.

After-Hours Emergency Care

Dental emergencies don’t always occur during regular business hours. If you experience a dental emergency outside of our normal operating hours, please call our office and leave a detailed message describing your emergency and contact information. We monitor our messages regularly and will return your call to provide guidance and arrange emergency care when necessary.

Managing Dental Pain at Home

While waiting for your emergency appointment, several home remedies can help manage dental pain temporarily. Over-the-counter pain medications can provide relief, but never place aspirin directly on your gums or teeth, as this can cause tissue damage. Cold compresses applied to the outside of your face can help reduce swelling and numb pain.

Avoid extremely hot or cold foods and beverages that may worsen sensitivity. Stick to soft foods and chew on the opposite side of your mouth if possible. However, remember these are temporary solutions – professional dental care is necessary to address the underlying problem and prevent complications.

Common Dental Emergency Treatments

Our emergency dental services include pain management and immediate treatment for various urgent conditions. We provide emergency extractions when teeth cannot be saved, temporary and permanent repairs for broken or cracked teeth, treatment for dental infections and abscesses, and replacement of lost fillings or crowns.

For patients who have experienced dental trauma, we offer comprehensive evaluation and treatment to address both immediate concerns and potential long-term complications. Our goal is to relieve your pain quickly while providing the best possible outcome for your oral health.

Preventing Dental Emergencies

While not all dental emergencies can be prevented, many can be avoided with proper oral care and precautions. Regular dental check-ups allow us to identify and treat problems before they become emergencies. Wearing a mouthguard during sports activities can protect your teeth from injury.

Avoid chewing on hard objects like ice, pencils, or popcorn kernels that can crack or break teeth. If you grind your teeth at night, consider wearing a night guard to protect against damage. Maintaining good oral hygiene and addressing dental problems promptly can prevent many issues from developing into emergency situations.
